Taking your dog on holiday!

Did you know?

  • Not only are pets the perfect ice-breaker, studies show that pet-owners are 60% more likely to meet new people!
  • Travelling with your pet allows you to enjoy your holiday at a slower pace, be flexible with your schedule and absorb every moment.
  • Exposing your pet to fresh new places makes them better at adapting to any changes that may happen later in life, such as house moves or new pets.

RSPCA Tips for a pet-friendly holiday

  1. Check the weather – dogs need to be protected from getting heatstroke
  2. Try to keep to their regular routine as much as possible (same walk times, food, toilet breaks).
  3. Keep them on the same diet as at home as a sudden change can cause them an upset stomach.
  4. Place the familiar-smelling item you took in your dog’s bed or where they’ll spend a lot of time – this will help them feel secure in an unfamiliar place.
  5. Give your dog the time they need to explore their new surroundings.
  6. Don’t leave them alone for a time that might cause them distress.
  7. Let them rest – during all the fun and excitement of the holiday make sure your dog has lots of time to rest undisturbed in a quiet and comfortable space.
  8. If walking in the dark or in dim light, have an LED collar or light attached so others can see your dog.
  9. Regularly check their behaviour, as any changes may mean they’re bored, stressed or ill.
  10. Don’t leave your dog where they could come to harm, such as tied up outside a shop in the heat.
